Get set! Complacency is a disease, and it spreads malignly through communities emaciated by austerity, where rising violent crime rates – prospering in the absence of an appropriate police presence – offer a window of opportunity to otherwise aimless minds. The scourge of apathy rots at the core of ambition, and only those with the steeliest of resolves can raise themselves above expectations to conceive a more purposeful and productive existence.
In an issue that celebrates the most vocal of risk-takers, outspoken Northampton rapper slowthai is the third of our four bold cover stars.
A paragon of possibility for those encumbered by small-town mentalities, he speaks to the young, directionless and disillusioned in this fractious time for Britain – because he can see himself in them.
“I want them to know that everyday might seem like a burden, and you could be in the worst situation ever, but remember that feeling is only temporary,” he declares to Clash. “Live in the moment and remember that there’s always a brighter side – where you are is where you’re meant to be at that time and you’ve just gotta see it for what it is and push forward. Break the boundaries that people have set for you.”
Also featured in this issue is Christine And The Queens, 6LACK, Neneh Cherry, Saba, Calpurnia, Swizz Beatz, Rico Nasty, Saweetie, Roger Daltrey, and much more. Final cover to follow.
