Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series is winning across the board plaudits, featuring five immaculately produced films.
Opening with fraught courtroom drama Mangrove, the series then swung into heady, Impressionistic territory on blues dance depiction Lover’s Rock.
Music has played a key part in the series – it sets the tone, illuminates the scene, and it also provides a key window into Black British life.
Nowhere was that more apparent than Lover’s Rock, and its sensational depiction of soundsystem culture – the sense of defiance, the palpable empowerment, and also the danger that comes with being shunted to the sidelines.
Culminating in multiple wheel ups of ‘Kunta Kinte Dub’ by The Revolutionaries, Lover’s Rock was a portrait not just of boy-meets-girl, but also of an entire culture.
Some kind soul has pieced together a full playlist featuring music from the episode – tune in below.
Thoughtfully, the official Small Axe team have also created an updating playlist focussing on the series – check that out now.
