Cardi B’s new single “Hot Shit” is finally here. The Bronx native dropped the Kanye West and Lil Durk-assisted tune on Friday (July 1), and in an interview with Apple Music, spoke on Ye’s surprisingly personal verse.
In a sit down with Zane Lowe, Cardi said the Yeezy mogul submitted the verse, “a couple of months ago when he was just all over the media, because of all of the things that were going on.” She was likely referring to Kanye’s very public divorce from Kim Kardashian, which consumed headlines back in February and March.
“Where you stand? Where was Jay at? Where was them at?/Where you done that? Where you live at? Another headline, ‘Where your hat at?’/’N-gga, go home, where your kids at?’,” Ye raps on “Hot Shit.”
“I like how his verse it’s personal, but it’s not personal,” Cardi noted. “It’s enjoyable in the clubs that you could be like, ‘Yeah, yeah. You talk your big cash.’ I really love it.”
She added that she wishes people could have personal conversations with Kanye like she has, just so everyone can see “the real him.”
“It’s almost like a persona, but kind of not,” Cardi B said of Ye. “Let’s say if he believes in something, right? And you’ll be like, ‘Do you really believe in this? Because you just want to be different or do you really believe in it?’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah, I really believe in it.’”
She continued, “But he got his reasons why he believe in it. And when he give you this reasons, you’ll be like, ‘Oh, okay. That does make sense. I get it. I get why you think like that. I get why you feel that way. I understand where you’re coming from.’”
Cardi added that Lil Durk, who’s already calling “Hot Shit” the “song of the year,” was great at bringing “that young energy.”
“I haven’t really heard a lot of music in the club that it’s like, when it comes on, it just made me want to throw bands,” Cardi said. “I feel like we’re missing these club bangers. I don’t know what’s going on right now… You know those records that Meek used to do, I want to hear one of those that it’s just like, pump me up. I’m trying to bring that with this record.”
“Hot Shit” is already garnering praise from fans. In an Instagram Story on Monday (June 27), the “WAP” rap star spoke on how the new single is a lot different from past Cardi tracks.
“It’s something that I feel like y’all haven’t heard from me before,” she said. “I feel like people is expecting a lot of slutness and blah blah blah. Y’all keep talking I keep making TikTok records and this is definitely not that. It’s a fun great record. It’s masculine [and] it’s great for the clubs. It’s great for the bitches.”
