Posted by Los Angeles-based band Dummy have officially announced their highly anticipated new album, ‘do you love the color of the sky?’, set for release on October 16th. Following the critical success of 2024’s ‘Free Energy’, which saw the group masterfully blending lithesome guitar textures with electronic sensibilities, this latest project promises to push their indie songcraft into even more experimental, club-adjacent territories.
The upcoming record draws heavy inspiration from the droning, left-field soundscapes of the 90s comedown era. Listeners can expect a sonic palette reminiscent of pioneers like Seefeel or Broadcast, enriched with soothing, atmospheric drones that ground the band’s evolving sound. Despite these nostalgic touchstones, the album maintains an incredibly current feel, largely driven by lyrics that grapple with the complexities of modern existence.
Lead single ‘Full Spectrum Dominance’ serves as a sharp commentary on the rise of artificial intelligence and the devaluation of human creativity. Guitarist Joe describes the track’s genesis: “I was trying to make something just heavier, and we joked it was our nu metal song. During the recording, we added the tambourine that gives it a more dancey vibe—Deee-Lite meets Deftones.”
Vocalist Emma further contextualizes the band’s thematic focus: “This is the Technofeudalism bop. Tech billionaires are treating AI like the new Alchemy, using it as a source of power and magic. This supposedly soon-to-be all-powerful technology could not exist without harvesting all of humanity’s intellectual property and collective work. ‘Prima Materia’ is the building block of all alchemical matter, so in the canon of the song, we humans are the Prima Materia.”
The band has also unveiled an experimental music video for the lead single, directed and animated by Matt Wells (POST MAN).
