In recent years, you could’ve had plenty of chances to go see the Guess Who, the Canadian classic rockers who made hits like “American Woman.” But the version of the Guess Who that you might’ve seen was a Ship Of Theseus situation with no original members. The rights to the name were held by founding bassist Jim Kale and drummer Garry Peterson, both of whom are effectively retired from playing live. Frontman Burton Cummings was not happy about this state of affairs, and he fought hard to regain control of the band’s name. Now, he’s taking the Guess Who back out on tour, and he’s got founding guitarist Randy Bachman with him.
Last year, Burton Cummings took the extraordinary step of ending performance rights agreements for all of the songs that he wrote. In the process, he sacrificed a lot of his own potential paychecks to make it impossible for that band or any others to play his songs at any licensed venues. A few months ago, Billboard reported that Cummings and co-founder Randy Bachman — who left the Guess Who to start Bachman-Turner Overdrive in 1970 — have come to a deal with Kale and Peterson.
Bachman and Cummings already sometimes performed together under the name Bachman-Cummings, and then they announced a Guess Who comeback show in Niagara Falls next January. Now, they’ve unveiled plans for a full Canadian tour. It’ll be their first time touring as the Guess Who in 23 years. The support act is Don Felder, playing Eagles songs. Check out the dates below.
