Legendary director and musician John Carpenter will release his new album ‘CATHEDRAL’ on August 7th. The composer, renowned for his work on iconic films such as Assault On Precinct 13 and Halloween, has seen a significant resurgence in his musical career throughout the 21st century, delivering a series of critically acclaimed projects.

This latest venture, ‘CATHEDRAL’, is a multi-disciplinary release that spans both a full studio album and a graphic novel. The project is rooted in a horror narrative that originated from a dream John Carpenter experienced in 2024. Describing the creative process, he notes, “It was so cinematic and vivid. I thought, ‘I have to score this.’ It’s kind of our first heavy metal album.”

The studio sessions, which lean into a crushing metal aesthetic, were a collaborative effort alongside Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies. Thematically, the work centers on an abandoned church in Los Angeles. Reflecting on the evolution of the sound, Daniel Davies explains, “The story informed everything. John would describe a scene and say, ‘We need a heavy riff here.’ We didn’t set out to make a metal record, but it evolved that way.”

The accompanying graphic novel is scheduled for release on August 4th via Storm King Comics. Fans can get a taste of the project’s intensity through the new single ‘Lord Of The Underground’, which is available now.
