American musician Gregg Foreman has died, it has been confirmed. A number of tributes began appearing on social media earlier today (April 22nd) with news of Foreman’s passing subsequently being confirmed through official sources. He was 53 years old.

Philadelphia born Gregg Foreman led the rambunctious outfit The Delta 72, matching James Brown-esque stage moves to songwriting fuelled by 60s R&B and the raw energy of the British Invasion. Fused together with punk rock intensity, the band released several exceptional records before eventually going on hiatus.

As a versatile musician, Gregg Foreman collaborated widely throughout his career. He appeared on the album Acme by kindred spirits The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, recorded with Cat Power, and worked alongside Kat Von D, amongst many others.

Close friends and peers have voiced their profound sadness at the news. Cold Cave’s Wesley Eisold shared a poignant tribute on Instagram, writing: “Like others, he bounced in and out of our lives and changed each one he visited. For better or for worse, he lived a life that others only claim to have lived and he was one of one. His love for music was as genuine as the pain he harbored.”

Matador Records also paid their respects via social media, stating: “Deepest condolences to all friends, family and bandmates of Gregg Foreman.”
