The Week In Review: J. Cole Returns & Kanye West's Meltdown Produces No Album

Posted by

While this week saw plenty of highly anticipated new releases from the likes of Logic, Lupe Fiasco, Flo Milli and more, it was also a week full of wackiness thanks to social media.

Oy Vey, Kanye!

A Kanye West album rollout is never without its fair share of controversy but Yeezy seemingly took his DONDA marketing too far on Monday (July 20), the week leading up to the previously announced release date. In an unprovoked blitz of tweets, Kanye kept the media frenzy from his failed presidential campaign buzzing by calling out his wife Kim Kardashian West and her mother Kris Jenner.

“Kris don’t play with me,” he said. “You and that Calmye [Cory Gamble] are not allowed around my children. Y’all tried to lock me up.”

He also vowed to never let his kids be photographed for Playboy and accused Kim of sleeping with Meek Mill.

Amid the Twitter frenzy, Kardashian pleaded for empathy from fans and the media, blaming Kanye’s bipolar disorder for his unfounded claims.

“As many of you know, Kanye has bi-polar disorder,” Kim wrote. “Anyone who has this or has a love on in their life who does, know how incredibly complicated and painful it is to understand. I’ve never spoken publicly about how this has affected us at home because I am very protective of our children and Kanye’s right to privacy when it comes to his health. But today, I feel like I should comment on it because of the stigma and misconception about mental health.

“Those that understand mental illness or even compulsive behavior know that the family is powerless unless the member is a minor,” she continued. “People who are unaware or far removed from this experience can be judgmental and not understand that the individual themselves have to engage in the process of getting help no matter how hard family and friends try.”

Kardashian West concluded her statement with confidence her husband is still remaining true to his artistry.

“Those who are close with Kanye know his heart and understand his words some times do not align with his actions,” she said. “Living with bi-polar disorder does not diminish or invalidate his dreams and his creative ideas, no matter how big or unobtainable they may feel to some. That is part of his genius and as we have all witnessed, many of his dreams have come true.”

Kanye later apologized to Kim amid divorce rumors no one has since addressed.

Also, DONDA was never released.

J. Cole Gears Up For The Fall Off

After being lured out of hiding early thanks to the NoName situation, J. Cole made his comeback official with the announcement — and release — of the first two singles from The Fall Off, his alleged final album.

But first, he basked in the rare distinction of being able a rapper who aligns with the mission of The Player’s Tribune, a website with personal diatribes penned by well-known professional athletes.

On the cusp of signing his deal with JAY-Z’s Roc Nation, Cole was still chasing the fleeting dream of making it to the NBA – and had a St. John’s campus pouring gas into his tank.

As legend has it, he chose the rap life over the ball is life mantra and released several critically acclaimed albums, even when finding inspiration was a struggle.

Fast forward to the present and Cole’s sixth studio album is officially underway.

“First 2 songs from The Fall Off. The Climb Back. Lion King on Ice. Available now,” he stated while plugging his co-producers Jetsonmade and T-Minus. The two-song project was packaged as an EP titled Lewis Street.

Fans Think Meek Mill Is Obsessed With Nicki Minaj

On July 20, Nicki Minaj’s pregnancy announcement was somewhat overshadowed with Meek Mill’s name in the trending topics. While some fans were stirring the pot, Meek did indeed intertwine himself in the melee; having commented on Demon Time founder Justin Laboy’s reaction to the news.

A week later, Meek voluntarily told the world he was a single man, months after giving birth with his girlfriend Milano Harris.

“We me and Milano decided to remain friends and build our child as separate parents … we still have mad love for eachother but we both came to a understanding! -meek-” he said in a tweet.
