The power of K-Pop cannot be overstated. No one could’ve predicted the wild success of “Golden” from Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters, which just won Best Original Song at the Golden Globes. It was also just performed by Japanese and South Korean leaders on drums at the end of a summit to discuss strategic cooperation amid the volatile geopolitical climate.
Yesterday Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who is a former heavy metal drummer, and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung bashed out both “Golden” and BTS’ 2020 hit “Dynamite” following a two-day bilateral summit in Nara, Japan. “The president learned to play the drums in just five, 10 minutes,” Takaichi, who is known for her right-wing views, complimented.
On Twitter, Myung wrote, “Just as we respected each other’s differences and found our rhythm together, I hope that Korea and Japan, too, can deepen their cooperation and take steps closer to each other.”
