Posted by The Paper Log: Shell and Core is the latest Issey Miyake artistic venture, currently on display from August 13th through September 13th at 21_21 Design Sight Gallery 3 in Tokyo, Japan. Initially, the project was presented throughout Milan Design Week in April. The project is made up of byproducts of the house’s pleated garments, forming an artistic arrangement.
‘Paper Log’ is a collection of the thinnest pleated paper sheets, the byproduct of the label’s pleating technology. The sheets are used to enwrap the fabric to shield it as it is fed through the pleating machine. The Paper Log was given its name because its appearance resembles a tree trunk.
One of the design directors of Miyake Design Studio, Satoshi Kondo, identified a use for the Paper Log, cutting them up to create stools, which were later used for the Issey Miyake Spring/Summer show in Paris during 2025. As the project expanded, the house invited Ensamble Studio architects to collaborate on the Paper Log.
