Posted by Fontaines D.C. have shared their new single, ‘Tongue’. The track serves as the second offering from the band’s highly anticipated fifth studio album, Dopamine Chamber, which is set for release on October 16th via XL Recordings.
The release is accompanied by a striking music video directed by John Angus Stewart and filmed by the band themselves on the streets of New York City. Following the success of their rousing lead single ‘Marianne’, ‘Tongue’ highlights a more expansive and experimental side of the group’s evolving sound.
Discussing the recording process, Conor Curley noted, “We continued where ‘Romance’ left off, leaving the live-band elements until they were really needed.” The track features innovative production techniques, including Conor Deegan’s manipulation of tape speed to create a slouchy, hip-hop-inspired bassline, and Carlos O’Connell’s use of a sampler to distort Grian Chatten’s vocals into an otherworldly, transmission-like texture.
The result is one of Dopamine Chamber’s most visceral moments: a track that feels physical and alive, even as its human components are processed into unfamiliar, haunting shapes. This new collection follows the band’s 2024 UK platinum-certified album Romance, marking a continued departure from the traditional guitar-driven language of their early records.
Reflecting on the thematic core of the record, Chatten explains, “The album itself is a dopamine chamber. You step inside and we test these different mind or mood-altering pieces of music on you.”
