Drake has officially released his highly anticipated album, Iceman, and as expected, the project serves as a platform for the Toronto superstar to address his recent industry conflicts. Alongside the release of two additional projects, Maid of Honour and Habibti, the Iceman LP finds Drizzy in a combative mood, firing shots at several high-profile adversaries.
On the track “Make Them Pay,” the OVO Sound leader directly challenges the narrative of the so-called “Big 3” of rap, which previously grouped him with Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. “F**k a big three anyway there was too many chefs in the kitchen/It was a mess to begin with,” he raps, signaling his desire to distance himself from the comparison.
The album also sees Drake taking aim at Rick Ross and Jay-Z. On “Whisper My Name,” he addresses his relationship with industry peers, stating, “I’ll take $500k, not the dinner, I never could learn sh*t from none of y’all.” Furthermore, he targets producer Mustard on the track “2 Hard 4 The Radio,” questioning the producer’s recent hit-making capabilities.
Beyond his rap rivals, Drake also takes a moment to call out DJ Khaled for his perceived silence regarding the humanitarian crisis in Palestine, adding a layer of social commentary to his aggressive lyrical output. With Iceman, it is clear that Drake is embracing a “scorched earth” approach to his current musical era.
