Posted by For awhile, it looked like Kendrick Lamar and Big Sean weren’t on good terms. There was some kind of unspoken animosity between the two that was only exacerbated by the internet.
But during a new interview with Sway In The Morning, Sean Don revisited a conversation they eventually had and revealed K. Dot even hit him up after hearing the Detroit 2 song “Deep Reverence” featuring the late Nipsey Hussle earlier this month.
Sean raps in his verse, “After what happened to Nipsey I reached out to Kendrick/It wasn’t even no real issues there to begin with/Lack of communication and wrong information from people/Fueled by the ego is like mixing flames with diesel/Energy crazy, I realize that it’s a two way street.”
Following Nip’s March 2019 murder, Sean tried to text Kendrick to smooth out their perceived differences but it turned out he had the wrong number. When they finally did connect, they were able to discuss the friction and put it behind them.
“The situation was, he thought that people around him were telling him something, people around me were telling me something, and it just really wasn’t the case,” he told Sway. “So, when we were able to talk, it was a good reconciliation and it was a good mutual respect. Even when he heard ‘Deep Reverence,’ he hit me and was like ‘Yo, I appreciate you showing that love. I appreciate that love in the verse. You and Nip went crazy. Y’all gassed on it.’
“It was good to get that response from your brother because on that record, I just was keeping it open and honest and real. I wasn’t trying to hold back. It was not out of disrespect, either. It was out of respect for myself and the things I’ve learned along the way.”
The alleged issues between Kendrick and Sean goes back to the 2013 collaboration “Control.” On the track, the Compton-bred MC calls out numerous rappers, including Sean. Rumors again began to fly in 2017 after K. Dot’s “The Heart Part 4” and the release of Kendrick’s Pulitzer Prize-winning album DAMN. Many people assumed the hook on “HUMBLE.” was a shot at Sean.
A few months later, Hip Hop fans thought Sean returned fire on the DJ Khaled track “On Everything.” But during an interview with Joe Budden in February 2020, Sean said it was all blown out of proportion.
“It was something I wish I would’ve spoke up about,” Sean said around the 90-minute mark. “There was nothing and when I say ‘nothing,’ I’m not even bullshitting you. You were one of the main people pushing the narrative. I can’t even fault you for that because … I was mad because at first I was like, ‘This was some bullshit.’

“Look, I don’t remember how it started. Some people said it started in a freestyle where I said something about somethin’, right? So I did ‘No More Interviews’ and I went crazy. Then I remember going online and seeing like, ‘Oh, is he talking about Kendrick’ because I was talking about people who rap fast.”
