It takes courage to be a pioneer. There were times in the last 15 years of Clash when we’d second-guess ourselves – usually when an opportunity was presented that raised excitement levels immeasurably but came with the risk of potential backlash or other consequences. The positives, however, would always outweigh the negatives, and we’d instinctively forge ahead until our apprehensions would be neutralised by the resulting impact of our best intentions.
People recognise and appreciate truth and sincerity when they see it, but it’s not always easy to maintain that sense of honour. This issue, therefore, is dedicated to those artists whose own fearlessness has developed through a necessity to turn the world upside down by fully expressing themselves.
Camila Cabello – the sixth and final cover star of issue 112 – once lived life on the outside looking in. Now, emboldened by love, bravery, and honesty, as the 22-year-old pop phenomenon prepares to drop her second album, she’s finally firmly in the present and learning to trust her emotions – and other people.
“Honestly, I think I’m just more brave,” she tells Clash. “I feel like I can be much more honest with myself and other people because obviously I’m growing up and I have a more grounded sense of who I am.”
Also featured in this issue are Juice WRLD, 070 Shake, Mahalia, Dev Hynes, Beth Ditto, These New Puritans, Lil Miquela, Conan Gray, Grace Carter, Valee, Sheryl Crow, and much more.
